When working with students and colleagues and Google docs, you have probably realized how loooooonnnngggg the links can be. Well, shorten them! Try one of the suggested ideas below.
- Go to goo.gl
- Sign into your Google account
- Paste your Google link into the YOUR ORIGINAL URL HERE field:
- Click the SHORTEN URL button:
- Click the COPY button:
- Paste the shortened link to your preferred location (email, webpage, Canvas page, etc.) or write it on the board for students.
Installing the goo.gl URL Shortener Chrome Extension
- Log into Chrome

- Access the Chrome Web Store
- Enter google shortener into the SEARCH field:
- Click the ADD TO CHROME button:
- Click ADD EXTENSION:
Using the goo.gl URL Shortener Chrome Extension
- While on the document, slide, sheet, etc. (or webpage) you would like to shorten, click the newly-added goo.gl shortener extension found in the top, right of the Chrome window:
- Click COPY from the drop-down menu found under the goo.gl shortener extension button (found in the top, right corner of Chrome):
- Paste the shortened link to your preferred location (email, webpage, Canvas page, etc.) or write it on the board for students.
YOu should check out bitly.com to shorten links. It is better than Google's and there is no need to create an account. You can also see how many people clicked on the link :)
